Jay Mariotti arrested news broke this afternoon, hours after Jay Mariotti was arrested for domestic assault. The Jay Mariotti arrest occurred at 4 a.m. this morning, according to the LAPD, as the sports columnist
reportedly got into a heated argument with his girlfriend. According to authorities, he allegedly pushed and shoved her, and also left marks on her arm, before LAPD officers came in. Although Jay Mariotti was arrested only on suspicion of domestic assault, the rumors have made the sports writer the subject of his own ugly scandal.
Hours ago, Mariotti was released on $50,000 bail from the 77'th Street station. It capped off an ordeal that allegedly started in Santa Barbara last night, when he and his girlfriend left a club. The LAPD claimed that sources said they were exchanging "harsh words," because Mariotti though the woman was flirting with another man.
But the Jay Mariotti arrested story really came about because he was accused of getting physical later in the night. Police said that "cuts and bruises" were found on the woman, after they arrested Mariotti in their apartment.
The sports writer is used to being in the headlines as much as the people he covers. He made a very public move from the newspapers to blogs, was referred to as a homosexual by Ozzie Guillen, and frequently debates on ESPN's Around The Horn. Yet the Jay Mariotti arrested news would overshadow all of that, if any of it is true.
ESPN and AOL's Fanhouse blog have been his employers since he left the Chicago Sun-Times in 2008. Neither ESPN or AOL had any comment on the issue, but they will have to eventually. They will obviously wait for more details on the Jay Mariotti arrest and circumstances, although it doesn't look good for him at first glance.
